The Program of the UMPRUM Visiting Artist Studio in the spring semester 2020/2021
UMPRUM is proud to announce that the visiting artist for the 2021/2022 fall semester is Matt Mullican
Matt Mullican (*1951, USA) works in performance, texts, drawing and other media. His research is concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning, language, and signification, as well as the relationship between perception and representation of reality. Mullican often performs under hypnosis before an audience, creating drawings and diagrams mapping his subconsciuos.
Mullican's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since the early 1970s at venues including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Haus Der Kunst, Munich, Germany, the National Galerie, Berlin, Germany, the Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, Netherlands, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, and The Museum of Modern Art, NY.
Mullican has taught and lectured at schools including Columbia University, New York, The Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The London Institute, England and Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Germany, among others.
Program description
Program title: Details from an Imaginary Universe
Representing the work, exploring the relationship between the subject and the sign. Looking for possibilities of expressing the self. From pictograms to written texts, virtual reality and hypnosis.
The structure of the program
The visiting artist will give a theoretical and practical course.
The program is structured in two intense in-person sessions in October and January, and several online meetings with Matt Mullican. Regular meetings of the group will be held weekly throughout the term.
Applications
The program is part of the Fine Arts Department of UMPRUM and is primarily reserved to its students but offers limited numbers of places to the students of other departments of UMPRUM. Students of the bachelor, master and PhD programs can apply.
All students apart from the students of the first year of Bachelor Program and the students currently graduating from Bachelor and Master Program are encouraged to enroll. The Visiting Artist Program is open to students of Fine Arts Department and all other UMPRUM departments in limited numbers.
To apply, students must have completed their previous semester and enrolled in the next semester. For applications please contact the UMPRUM Study department.
