From 6 to 10 June, the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague will once again be opening its doors to the public and presenting the work of its students from the 2017/18 summer semester. An exhibition of semester and final exam projects from across the entire school, ARTSEMESTR summer 2018 will fill the school from the ground floor to the attic.
The work that visitors will see here will be more than diverse. Every studio will offer at least one theme. The Studios of Architecture have this year been inspired by Prague and its large public buildings, such as the Parliament Building, or by London’s Philharmonic Hall. Scented with coffee and assignments inspired by it, the Studios of Design have been enchanted by inflatable structures, the mechanics of machines and sex robots.
The Studios of the Department of Fine Arts offer more than just a free field of activities and free assignments. How do students deal with assignments such as “Error and Working with Failure”, “Inheritance of Shapes” or “Inspiration”? And the Studio of Sculpture, which for its “Apartment” project has rented an apartment that, among other things, it interconnects with its own studio using computer games, proves that the event is not only concerned with “traditional works of art”.
This year, the Department of Applied Arts has primarily dealt with large projects overlapping the two semesters, whether it is the Studio of Textile Design with its “From Aš to Už/horod” project inspired by family companies which were present at the origin of the First Czechoslovak Republic, the “Power of Identity: Memory Fashion Message” project of the Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design, “Colours of Transparency” of the Studio of Glass or “Artificial Intelligence” of the Studio of Fashion Design, which transcends the traditional concept of clothing design and applies modern technology to it.
The Studios of Design will not only delight lovers of books, magazines, quality graphics and films. Projects on the theme “Visual Alphabet”, the 7th issue of Deleatur magazine, Department edition, and the “Movement Manifest”. will be presented. Among other things, the Studio of Film and TV Graphics shows us what the preparation of the animation of its films looks like.
“This year, we have decided to support Artsemestr with a non-traditional programme at the UM Gallery. People will be able to see for themselves that our school does not only train graphic artists, architects, designers and artists, but people with much wider interests and an overlap into other fields”, says professor Jiří Pelcl, Vice-Rector for Communication and International Relations, describing the accompanying programme at the UM Gallery. The project “Hang the DJ!” (UMPRUM Summer Hits Radio From the Bong) will fill the gallery with audiovisual experiments, concerts and a DJ production by UMPRUM students.
