Design 3 2 1
Department of design UMPRUM and other presentations at Designblok 2018
October 25th – October 29th, 2018
Openstudio, Průmyslový palác, Výstaviště 67
Open: Thursday–Monday 10 am–9 pm
The main part of the presentation of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague at the Designblok show will be an exhibition of the entire Design department, consisting of Design 3 2 1. Presented will be the latest works from the studios, but most importantly it will show the education process and how the whole design process works.
The Design Department consists of 3 studios - the Studio of Industrial Design, the Studio of Furniture and Interior Design and the Studio of Product Design, which are abbreviated as follows D1, D2, and D3. "We did not want an overloaded presentation, but rather make a fun selection that best presents what and how is made at our school. That's why every studio got the tricky task of choosing only 3 works from one project to be represented, " says vice-rector and former head of the Studio of Furniture and Interior Design Jiří Pelcl.
The Industrial Design Studio selected the project "voňavý"(fragrant) which focuses on coffee-brewing, specifically creating a mechanism for proper milling. The successfulness of the prototypes will be tested directly at the exhibition booth. The Studio of Furniture and Interior Design selected to present an unusual interior accessory - inflatables made in cooperation with the company Fatra. The Studio of Product Design will focus on mechanics, which in the current context in the field of design development has come to the background. It introduces a selection of playful machines that have already been seen at the exhibition Mechanical in Brussels.
At first glance, the heterogeneous display of various projects is linked not only by the unified architecture and graphic design, but most of all by the collective idea, to show the design process, and what is being learned in the studios and how the designs originate. During Designblok the Design Department's booth will become a detachment from the school, where students will solve and create work based on the assignment –"Metr". From the first day, it will be possible to watch the "Metr" workshop in real time and witness the whole process from assignment, to first sketch, consultations with teachers, and 3d print prototyping. Regular consultations with the teaching faculty will take place starting Friday until Sunday from 2 pm – 4 pm.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be a 2018 special edition UMPRUM newspaper published, where apart from information about the Studios and Design 3 2 1, there will be an overview of other UMPRUM exhibitions at Designblok.
Directly located at Výstaviště Holešovice there will be a project exhibited by the Studio of Furniture and Interior Design for the company Swissdent, there will be even two representations by the Studio of Fashion Design, with EKG Smart Fashion a collection that is focused on artificial intelligence in clothing, We want machines to become more human while we are becoming machines. The UM Gallery will host an exhibition of transport design from six Czech and Slovak colleges called Design! in Motion, the Studio of Glass has transferred their expanded and modified exhibition Colors of Transparency from London to Campus Hybernská. Within the framework of the display the main part of the project Aš po Už / horod from the Studio of Textile Design will be realized in Libčice nad Vltavou. There will also be a separate presentation of students and teachers of the school, including untitled_collective, studio Vono, Petr Vykoukal, and Natálie Navrátilová, Sebastian Kitzberger and Kristýna Fingerlandová. From the teaching faculty at Designblock presenting will be such stars as Liběna Rochová, Jiří Pelcl, the duo Vrtiška, and Žák, Eva Eisler, Petr Babák, Maxim Velčovský, Olgoj Chorchoj, and many others.
On Friday the 26th of October while Designblok will be taking place, there will also be an open house at UMPRUM.
