Design! In Motion
26th of October – 8th of December, 2018
Opening: Thursday, 25th of October
UM Gallery, UMPRUM, nám. Jana Palacha 80, Praha 1
Where will transport design be and where should it be minimized? How do Czech and Slovak college students perceive the future? So we could briefly summarize the latest exhibition Design! In Motion at the UM Gallery.
The exhibition curators Jana Mattas Horáčková and Vlastimil Bartas the assistant of the UMPRUM Studio of Industrial Design, will focus on the possibilities of future transport. The installation will offer classic automobile designs, mobility solutions in urban agglomerations, personal transportation devices, such as bicycles and scooters.
Presented will be works from seven Czech and Slovak universities that deal with designing modes of transportation. We can find the origin of the exhibition in doc. Miroslav Zvonka's project from STU Bratislava, he connected schools to this concrete focus and presented their projects.
In order for the visitors of the exhibition to view the latest models and every detail, the exposition focuses not only on standard sketches, visualizations, and models. Thanks to virtual and augmented reality, it will be nearly possible to feel the selected exhibits. Through these technologies, visitors will be able to in detail explore trams, buses, and the interior of a sports car model.
For example, visitors can look forward to seeing a transparent Audi model from VŠVU of Bratislava, an electric car for a sustainable city from the STU of Bratislava, and an electric scooter designed for the urban environment from the VUT Studio in Brno. The sculptural car model from the Industrial Design Studio of UMPRUM will certainly gain attention. This design, with similarities close to art design, was inspired by interwar avant-gardism, specifically Russian constructivism, and was designed for transport in Moscow. VUT Brno and UMPRUM have long-term engagement in urban transport, where at the same time they will present their project of autonomous trams.
The selected exhibits reflect a vision of the future, which is based on current development within materials and technologies. At the same time, the exhibition tries to predict possible developments and respond to all needs. "When proposing ideas for transportation design, it mirrors deeper issues like what are the boundaries of new technologies and their uses, ecology and a future committed to industry and new technology," as one of the curators Vlastimil Bartas collects the thinking of his young students
These questions will be addressed in a rich accompanying program of the exhibition, the main part of which is a conference. The conference on the future of transportation design will take place on Wednesday, the 14th of November, 2018, 7pm at CAMP - Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning in Prague. There will be a discussion of not only issues of the far future but also of present-day issues such as autonomous transport, car sharing, passenger car issues in future public spaces, public transport and the overall impact of transport on life and ecology in cities. The guests will be represented by prominent figures, among them will be many designers, scientists, and philosophers.
