 Superstudio Nákladové nádraží Žižkov

The Designblok Superstudio, where the best Czech producers and schools will display their latest products, will be located in Nákladové nádraží Žižkov, which currently represents one of the most discussed buildings in Prague. Designed by Karel Caivas and Vladimír Weiss from 1931 to 1934, the unique functionalist building was incorporated into the list of national sights this year. Nevertheless, it primarily serves as a warehouse. Its different use for the future has come into shape only slowly. Based on its exceptional location within the broader downtown, good accessibility by public transport, great developmental visions, and the inimitable disposition of its individual buildings, Nákladové nádraží Žižkov has the potential to become an interesting social and cultural center similar to deserted industrial spaces that have been renovated in Berlin, London, and Rotterdam. Following the international Prague Biennial, Designblok will serve as one of the first events to shape up such a future. Thus, Designblok follows a tendency evident at a range of other design weeks worldwide (Dockland in London, Ventura Lambrate in Milan) while returning to an industrial space after several years to discover important architectural sights once again (such as ČKD in Karlín, workshops on Libeňský ostrov, Holešovice brewery, etc.).

The Superstudio – the key Designblok exhibition space – will be situated in the Nákladové nádraží Žižkov compound at several sections, namely on several floors of the former warehouse. Installations by producers and curatorial exhibitions will be complemented with stylish cafés and bars, plus several presentations located within railway carriages. One hall will be reserved for presentations from colleges and high schools that focus on design and art. The flow of visitors will be directed outside the usual transport routes to the indoor part of the tracks and platforms, which is the most interesting part of the entire compound as far as architecture is concerned. The compound and its attractiveness, the main Designblok exhibition, as well as various options for individual exhibition modules, will offer visitors an exceptional experience.
