Milan Pekař – On the Surface (Popovrchu)

Ceramic glazes as a catalyst for emotions and relationships. In the open space between science and art. From intuition through chaos to information. Colors - structures - deformation. If a ceramic vase, then also ceramic furniture.

On the surface (Popovrchu), the exhibition of Milan Pekař, a teacher of the UMPRUM Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain, in-depth examines ceramic glazes as information carriers. The research part here gradually transitions into artistic creation.

Milan Pekař's work is based on the study and principles of using glazes and their functions. Milan further evaluates his knowledge, experiments and creates his own glazes, which he applies to various surfaces - vases of pure forms, or, conversely, to ceramic objects modeled from softly extruded profiles. He uses the natural relationship between shape, color, and surface structure. "Exploring this relationship is currently my biggest motivation for further development. I perceive ceramic vessels and objects as a three-dimensional canvas. I perceive the circular form of the volume of vases as a looped endless surface, " says Milan Pekař about his work.

Milan's art is characterized mainly by work with crystalline glazes. Milan's work revives long-disused old technologies and at the same time enriches them with the results of his experiments with various metal oxides. "Working with basic chemical elements and their compounds, combined with the purposeful use of firing temperatures, brings unexpected shades of color, diverse structures, and sometimes completely new minerals. In his experiments, he not only achieves unique color combinations and textures based on the spontaneous dynamic growth of crystals, but he also manages to create his own unique mixtures, such as metallic crystalline glazes.", as Radek Wohlmuth, the curator of the exhibition, describes the uniqueness of Milan Pekař's work.

The exhibition On the Surface (Popovrchu) is the result of Milan Pekař's doctoral thesis. In addition to the objects themselves, Milan also presents an experimental technological part, for example, images of glazes taken through an electron microscope. His experiments with glazes document hundreds of test vases, the installation of which loosely refers to the "porcelain rooms" in aristocratic residences. The presentation also includes a series of porcelain vases with various types of crystalline glazes, or ceramic objects - furniture based on archetypal shapes of architecture and applied art.

The exhibition can be seen at the UM Gallery until October 10th, 2020.
