“Anyone who wants to succeed in the world of today will sooner or later be subjected to some form of selection process. Opportunities and funding are offered to us only under the the condition that we enter a competition. Often, the only justification for such a competition is competition itself: we have to participate to prove that our skills and knowledge are worthy of being used at all,” is how one of the author-curators, Martina Smutná, describes the concept.
In their joint Open Call project, the authors allow actual creative approaches to navigate the set frameworks of the selection process. Auditions are presented as metaphorical filters that screen what is allowed to develop. The pattern of their sieve determines social value.
Open Call provides an opportunity to abandon for a while the familiar environment of the art world and construct a fictional world of film. The excursion into the environment of film production includes an encounter with an experimental set design method, geared to the creation of fantastic worlds. At the same time, it becomes apparent that the manual for creating a perfect presentation can bend its own object: the original creative approach. The clash between uniqueness and utility is this time set against the backdrop of an unfinished fantasy movie. Once again, there is no clear winner.
