The exhibition entitled There and Back presents a deliberately narrowed selection of six recent examples from the areas of contemporary design, architecture and urbanism.

Six examples: Aging dress by Zuzana Kubíčková • Old-new shoes by Zuzana Ševčíková and Eliška Kuchtová • Cemetery type byVojtěch Říha • Instant telephone by Jan Čtvrtník • Adaptable house by Ondřej Michálek • Black-and-white landscape by Jan Vybíral

The exhibition curators, who also teach at the Department of Art Theory and History of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, explain the concept as follows: “The principal criterion was the subject of time or, more precisely, various time levels of the present.”

What does it mean today to be contemporary, what is the temporality of the present?

Obviously, it exceeds the framework of what is taking place right now.

Some contemporary works deliberately return to pre-images of the past, others channel the future. Some are weird mixtures of both, can be passéistic and visionary at the same time. Between these direct opposites, between inspiration and looking back into the past and there into the future, lie several time levels that touch upon the issues of transience, temporariness and ephemerality and, in contrast, also upon the concepts of permanence and eternity.

The exhibition is accompanied by a folder with a brief presentation of the six projects in Czech and English, and a publication including specialist studies, interviews with leading figures in art and design and a wealth of photographs.
