“The map is not the territory. There is no organisation. There is only you.“ – These words describe the main theme of the exhibition of emerging young Czech designers who are coming to London to exhibit their work at the International Fashion Showcase 2017. They hope to retain the enormous achievement of their predecessors who won the Country Award for the best presentation at the IFS 2016. Held at the Somerset House, between 17 – 21 February 2017, the exhibition titled There Is Only You will feature students and fresh graduates of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). This year marks the fourth time the Czech Centre London brings the country’s young fashion design elites to the glamorous event, as a part of London Fashion Week.
“Five exhibiting Czech fashion designers define specific personal territories that co-exist in an unregulated space where ordinary rules need not to be applied. Calling upon individual activity, self-awareness and personal responsibility – here comes the kaleidoscope of different “detached” points of view. It’s not about finding yourself – it’s about creating yourself,” explains the exhibition theme its curator Pavel Ivančic, an award-winning designer and Central Saint Martin’s graduate. “Within our programme, we see fashion as a form of art, rather than a business commodity. We try to present fashion with overlaps to other fields of study – how it is able to interact with the current world and manage to preserve good quality craft at the same time. Personally, I find cooperating with designers really inspiring and some of their designs happen to end up in my closet from time to time, “ adds Tereza Porybná, director of the Czech Centre London.
Participating designers from AAAD – Michaela Čapková, Filip Hieke, Tereza Rosálie Kladošová, Tereza Ledvinová and Kateřina Plamitzerová – are no newcomers to the global fashion debate. Many of them have scooped internships and collaborations with the likes of Steven Tai or Anne Sofie Madsen and showcased their work at various highly respected fashion events such as Mercedes-Benz Prague Fashion Week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, Peking Fashion Week, etc.
Within this year’s IFS main theme - Global/Local - we may discover the designers’ personal thoughts and feelings through their unconventional and fabulous designs. Balancing between the spiritual and the material; finding individual integrity shelter within the beauty of flowers; femininity beyond categories inspired by personal mythology and manga; perception of the human body – how it appears and interacts with others; merging objects of everyday use with garments and thus creating authentic personality of a young gentleman. These are only a few examples of allegoric meanings that visitors might be able to sense from various individual designs displayed at the Czech exhibition.
For the London showcase, the young designers are supervised by professors from AAAD, a prominent Czech arts institution founded in 1885 – Czech fashion icon, Liběna Rochová, and the celebrated Olgoj Chorchoj Studio, alongside with the exhibition curator Pavel Ivančic, who is now the head of the Fashion Studio of AAAD and the head designer of Czech top-class brand Pietro Filipi.
There Is Only You is part of International Fashion Showcase 2017 presented by Mercedes-Benz.
Organised by the British Council, British Fashion Council and Mercedes-Benz in association with London Fashion Week, IFS 2017 will take the theme of Local/Global.
