At UMPRUM, Professor of Typography Gerry Leonidas will give a lecture. He is interested in typeface design processes, typographic education, and Greek typeface design and typography. Among other areas, his work explores theoretical questions of typeface design, global visual culture, and education. At UMPRUM, he will present a lecture titled “Typeface Design As An Emerging Research Discipline.”
Is typeface design safe from emerging technologies? How often is this question asked, and what’s a response that protects what’s important, maps a growth path globally, and integrates what some people see as threats? The answer has to do with research and reflection: building knowledge and understanding its value. This presentation will mention archives, interdisciplinary methodologies, neuroimaging, and most of the words that annoy conservative commentators.
Gerry Leonidas (UK / GR) is the professor of typography, with particular focus on typeface design. He researches, supervises, teaches, and engages with companies and public bodies. His work leads the transformation of typeface design and typography into interdisciplinary fields of study and practice.
