Graphic Design and Visual Communication
Creative freedom and conscious play are grounded in knowledge and an understanding of context.
The Studio of Graphic Design and Visual Communication (GDVK) sees graphic design as an open discipline whose boundaries are constantly shifting. Our focus is therefore not simply on mastering individual media or forms, but above all on developing the ability to think about visual communication in a broader context—to understand what we communicate, why, to whom, and how. We see visual communication as a process of encoding and decoding meaning.
Teaching is structured around extended semester projects complemented by shorter workshops. In an age of rapidly circulating images and fragmented attention, we believe it is important to cultivate focus, patience, and a sense of responsibility for seeing a project through to completion. Each assignment therefore begins with thorough research, an exploration of the subject, and an investigation of its historical, social, or cultural context. We encourage students to understand the sources they draw on, to justify their decisions, and to look beyond visual references found by chance.
We see the academic environment as an opportunity to explore subjects in depth, experiment, and question established practices. At the same time, we connect teaching with real-world practice and specific institutions. Open-ended, experimental projects alternate with practical briefs that introduce students to actual audiences, constraints, and the responsibilities that visual communication entails. The final outcome is equally important to us: a project should not remain solely on screen but, wherever its nature allows, be fully realised through considered choices of materials, printing, or physical production.
Amid accelerating technological change and the rise of artificial intelligence, we consider critical thinking essential, alongside the ability to engage in discussion, question assumptions, step outside one’s comfort zone, and develop an independent position. Technology is a tool—the human capacity to think, make decisions, and exercise critical judgement remains fundamental.
