European Typographic Proofreader

Status: ongoing

Project duration: 2023 - 2026

Funded by: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic

Main researchers: Mgr. Filip Blažek and doc. MgA. Radek Sidun

Project summary:

The main aim of the project is to provide the professional and general public in the European Union with a tool that will bring any text written in one of the 24 official EU languages into line with the typographic rules in force in that language. While existing technologies theoretically allow most typographical errors to be automatically corrected, no such tool has been developed. This research will result in a publicly accessible database of these rules, followed by a web application, which will be accessible and useful to ordinary users as well as to public and commercial institutions by improving the quality of their textual output and reducing the time needed for editing.

Who is our partner?

Partner of this project is slovakian software company SLONline s.r.o.

What will be the results of this project?

Two main results will be:

  1. A publicly accessible database of typographical errors and methods for correcting them. The data will be structured to enable the creation of a tool for automated text corrections, the corrections themselves will be defined using regular expressions (GREP). The secondary output will be a clear list of typographical errors in each of the processed languages, including a detailed description of the individual problems.
  2. An online web application allowing any user to correct typographical errors in the inserted text in one of the 24 official EU languages. The application will be fast, user-friendly, reliable, and expandable with additional functions in the future. The user interface will be in English. Premium functions (e.g. automatic corrections in uploaded files or huge volumes of text) may be subject to a fee in the future.
