We warmly invite you to join us for the autumn lecture series, part of the Ignored Technology research and education project. Together with our guest speakers, we'll look at the margins of technology – the tools, media, and processes that let us understand and shape our environment, or simply live our everyday lives. Rather than approaching technology as a means of human control, we'll open the floor to perspectives that foreground what tends to be overlooked or underestimated: non-human agency, knowledge beyond established scientific methods, and processes that escape centralized oversight.
Program:
- 7 Oct – Bob Kuřík, anthropologist (Faculty of Humanities, Charles University) (in Czech): on the ResisTerra project and multispecies coexistence in the Anthropocene
- 14 Oct – Kateřina Konvalinová artist and agroecologist (UMPRUM) (in Czech): on wool as a socio-ecological agent and future prospects for its use in the local environment
- 29 Oct – Alison Clarke, design historian and theorist (die Angewandte, Vienna): on the Victor Papanek archive and the politics of its exploration
- 11 Nov – Maja Gunn, designer and researcher (Konstfack, Stockholm): on the agency and performativity of clothing and textiles
- 18 Nov – Adrià Carbonell, architect and researcher (KTH, Stockholm): on love and other low-tech methods of architecture and infrastructure-building
- 25 Nov – Agata Szydłowska, art & design historian (Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw): on designing with non-human actors
- 9 Dec – Mark Thomas Young, design and technology theorist (University of Oslo): on the material metabolism of the iPhone and possibilities for "bottom-up" circularity
All lectures will take place at the Mikulandská Technological Center, in room no. 318, starting at 6 pm (with the exception of Alison Clarke's lecture, which will start at 6:30 pm). The first two talks will be held in Czech, all the others in English.
The series is organized by SHIFT – Sustainability Transitions Lab UMPRUM.
Co-funded by the European Union.
