What happens to the places we live in when we produce more than we can consume? This unique interdisciplinary project by the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) at the current Milano Design Week delivers a raw message about the things we would rather not see - textile waste and the world of people living on the margins of society.

WASTED WASTE - UMPRUM at Milan Design Week 2026

The performative installation, created in collaboration with the Product Design, Fashion and Footwear Design, and Fine Arts IV studios, presents garments made from discarded textiles, striking visual materials, and newly developed recycled materials transformed into usable objects.

The idea originates from a forgotten corner of the Czech borderlands, the Broumov region in northeastern Czechia, home to one of the country’s largest textile waste sorting facilities.

Wasted Waste is a small step toward local responsibility. It builds on the region’s fragmented textile past and works with what remains. The project is a study of a community learning to live with this burden and explores ways to address it through design practice. It offers a glimpse beneath the surface of local initiatives and artistic research that aim to help both the planet and people in need.
