In the winter semester, the Department of Architecture at UMPRUM continues its lecture series Architectural Discourse Infrastructures, exploring the various formats, media, and institutions involved in the production, interpretation, and dissemination of architecture. The series examines how the image of contemporary architecture is constructed, who shapes it, and how it enters public debate. The first lecture of the semester will take place on Tuesday, 29. 9. 2026 at 19.30, featuring Dutch architect and filmmaker Jord den Hollander, co-founder and chief curator of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR).
The lecture series aims to introduce and critically reflect on the functioning of architectural discourse through the media and formats in which architecture is presented – including institutions, exhibitions, publishing and educational platforms, as well as audiovisual media. It places particular emphasis on questions of visibility and representation: which types of projects and topics are foregrounded today, who has the ability to articulate them, and which value frameworks accompany them.
In the field of audiovisual media, we are interested in how film shapes the ways we perceive, interpret, and discuss architecture. We explore the kinds of narratives and perspectives that films and podcasts make possible, the relationships they establish with their audiences, and the extent to which they can serve not only as tools for popularising architecture but also as platforms for its critical reflection. The lecture will examine the reciprocal relationship between film and architecture – from the earliest moving images depicting the built environment to contemporary audiovisual formats – and will open up broader questions about the role of film in shaping both the image of architecture and architectural discourse itself.
Jord den Hollander is a Dutch architect, co-founder and chief curator of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR). After completing his master’s degree in architecture at Delft University of Technology, he went on to study screenwriting at the London Film School. Throughout his career, he has consistently combined these two disciplines. He has directed numerous documentary films on art and architecture and has written and directed internationally acclaimed television series for children about art and science. Alongside his work as a filmmaker and curator, he also maintains an architectural practice. His distinctive body of work includes an architecture centre for children in Almere, a mobile children’s library, a floating hotel, and a tensegrity bicycle bridge.
The lecture series is curated by Karolína Plášková and takes place within the course Contemporary Architectural Discourses. The lecture is part of Jord den Hollander’s residency organised by KRUH as part of the Film and Architecture Festival, taking place from 30. 9. to 5. 10. 2026. As part of the festival’s accompanying programme, Jord den Hollander will also present his Big Brutal Quiz, taking place on 2 October at 7:30 pm at Kavárna Na Boršově.
