The Apple and Its Shadow

Six female students from the Studio of Textile at Prague’s Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design respond to the work of artists and architects who collaborated with the entrepreneur Josef Sochor’s textile company through their own textile designs, objects and installations. One of these artists was the painter and printmaker František Kysela, who designed textile prints for Sochor with the picture of an apple and its shadow. The title of the exhibition refers not only to this design, but also describes a more general dialogue between an original and its interpretation.

Using large-format textile printing and other techniques, the artists engage in an intergenerational dialogue with Emilie Paličková, Marie Fischerová-Kvěchová, Jaroslava Vondráčková, Jiří Trnka, Josef Svolinský and Josef Gočár. Working in their own distinctive manner and within a contemporary context, they process various of these artists’ motifs relating to more profound questions regarding the form of art and society.
