Pavel Coufalík

Pavel Coufalík is a graphic designer focusing primarily on the design of visual identities, publications and the application of graphic design in architecture (orientation systems, exhibitions). Following this practice, he is also interested in theoretical-historical research on topics connecting graphic design and architecture. For a period of 5 years, Coufalik was engaged in his own research of orientation systems in Czechoslovak architecture of the 1970s and 1980s. This issue - as well as other related topics, such as the application of neons or typography in Czechoslovak architecture -processed in the author's publications awarded in competitions such as the National Prize for Student Design (2x 1st place), Czech Grand Design Awards (2nd place in category Discovery of the Year) or the Most Beautiful Czech Books (Arno Sáňka Award). He also researches selected chapters related to the history and identity of his hometown Zlin.


In the project, the author deals with comprehensive research on the development of visual communication in the public space of the city of Zlín. In the context of individual historical periods, the project examines topics particularly related to the application of typography, light in architecture, orientation systems or visual identities. The project leads to a description of contemporary principles and procedures co-shaping the visual form of city streets in general as well as captures the specific context of the application of graphic design in the architecture of the city with a unique character. As a follow-up to this research, the author deals with the design of information system elements based on the principle of printed electronics or electronic-mechanical solutions.
