Joanie Guerrero, a graduate of the Studio of Fine Arts III UMPRUM within the English-language Visual Arts programme, is exhibiting at Místečko Gallery in Prague. In her exhibition Blurred memories, the young Peruvian artist explores the theme of memory through video installations, archival materials, and analogue collages.
A glimpse, an unexpected fog, an abrupt memory. A sudden spasm brings traces of remembrances we can't escape - yet something seems missing, impossible to untangle.
Blurred memories invites us into a delicate and unstable space, a landscape created through vague, imperfect memories, coming from the recollection of a recollection. The work by the artist Joanie Guerrero explores family ties and the very act of remembering those relationships, the expectation of the so-called nuclear family, and the ways in which these shape us.
In her first solo show, the Peruvian artist doesn’t only pull us into this suspended moment of existence that comes from the present, investigates the past, and creates a new meaning for the future, but also welcomes us into her own intimate modus operandi.
Working through archives, analog collages and video installations, Guerrero physically and digitally cuts archival images into pieces, glueing them back together into new constellations of meaning.
“It’s about searching, investigating, cutting, separating, allowing the different parts to become dispersed. In the end, it’s like putting together a puzzle using different materials - something I used to do a lot as a child,” shares the artist reflecting on her creative process.
Blurred memories offers visitors the opportunity to linger on the missing pieces of the puzzle, on a certain absence, on the gaps that our mind creates during the act of remembering.
