What does studying at UMPRUM offer students? How does the school develop the talents of its students? And how do students develop during their school years? This is shown in a large school-wide showcase of final theses, laconically called Diploma and Bachelor Projects. This time, both buildings of The Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague will be open to the public and visitors will be able to see student work within the authentic environment of the school.

Diploma and Bachelor Projects 2023

"The exhibition of diploma and bachelor projects is a celebratory event for me. It is a joy to see how our students mature artistically and humanly, how they find their own, distinctive paths. I will be sorry to say goodbye to most of them. But I am sure that they will do well in the world of art and design," says Prof. Jindřich Vybíral, Rector of UMPRUM, about the exhibition.

Many graduates collaborated with various subjects, companies, and organizations in the creation of their thesis projects and tried to create their thesis in such a way that their idea would not only end with thesis defenses but also find practical applications after graduation. Increasingly, there is also a sustainable approach and an emphasis on ecology, craft, and society.

Probably the most significant example of cooperation between students and industry is the bachelor's project of the Studio of Industrial Design. In cooperation with the Škoda Group, they worked on various assignments on the topic of autonomous transport. Social aspects are addressed in Emma Soukupová's graduate work from the  Studio of Architecture I, "Discovering the urban community". She focuses on infrastructure for homeless people in selected Prague locations. Part of her work is also a strategy on how to finance and implement these interventions.

The diploma thesis of Františka Benčaťová from the Studio of Textile Design, who prepared an experimental collection of jacquard fabrics in Ghent, Belgium, is certainly worthy of attention. Dita Lešovská from the Studio of Concept – Object – Meaning (K.O.V.) also focuses on the innovation of traditional crafts, reviving the tradition of inlay and intarsia in her diploma work "Mysterium".

For example, Sára Kordová, a student of the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain is responding to the current environmental situation with her ceramic 3D-printed vessel "Flowerpot 2.0". The vessels are designed to gradually moisten the surrounding environment by evaporating water.

Among other works dealing with new technologies, we can mention Vojtěch Kočí from the Studio of Animation and Film, who produced a diploma thesis on using procedural (or automatically generated by code) animation. We can also mention the bachelor's thesis of Jakub Kozelka from the Studio of Design and Digital Technologies, who created an original atmospheric game with a unique game principle called "Veins".

Finally, we should point out the huge immersive installation by David Nosek, a graduate of the Studio of Fine Arts II, which will be presented in the normally inaccessible spaces of the Clementinum of the National Library of the Czech Republic, or the group exhibition of students of the Studio of Fine Arts IV and the Studio of Photography II at the Fotograf Gallery, whose work is connected by sensitivity to the environment and awareness of their situation, as well as a reflection of social and planetary events.

The show, which will enliven both UMPRUM buildings for more than a week, will be open daily from the 1st to the 8th of June.
