We invite you to the exhibition My Body Is the Temple for Which I Stand by Richenza Detwiler, which you can see at the NIKA Gallery.
Richenza studies at the Photography Studio II at UMPRUM, and is currently completing an internship at the Fine Arts III Studio. In her work, she focuses on socio-political themes. Through personal memories, testimonies, and observations, she explores the broader context of social prejudices, gender stereotypes, and questions of identity.
This exhibition thematizes the social pressure projected onto women’s bodies in relation to motherhood. It reflects the loss of bodily autonomy, which becomes subordinated to expected social roles. These expectations do not concern only pregnant women but shape our perception of the body long before that.
In her work, Richenza examines her own body and traces how these pressures are reflected in her relationship to herself. Through this personal perspective, she addresses all those who have experienced similar pressures. The exhibition title, gently ironic and drawing on internet language, simultaneously calls for the liberation of the body and for collective support. The work thus validates and makes present the experience of objectification and bodily alienation as a broader social phenomenon.
The opening will be accompanied by a DJ (dj ema).
