The glass sculpture Substrate Fissure by Philip Frank, a student of the Glass Studio and also a workshop master at UMPRUM, received honorable mention at The International Exhibition of Glass competition in Japan.

Philip's work was judged among 56 other selected works. In the autumn, it will be exhibited as part of The International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa 2022 traveling exhibition at the Shiinoki Cultural Complex and subsequently at the Notojima Glass Art Museum. 

Substrate Fissure explores the material limits of the glass casting process. Through unconventional casting technology and the deliberate cracking of the plaster mold, some of the glass is allowed to flow freely out of the mold, achieving a novel and seemingly chaotic result. The work is a dialogue between the artist/creator, the machine (CNC), and the chaos of nature, with organic elements appearing by chance during the sculpture's creation. The sculpture reflects contemporary life and the results of the clash between nature and technology and vice versa. The sculpture combines visual elements of machines, architectural terrain for models, infrastructure, waves, mountains, and the body. The upper part of the piece is made of very thin fragile glass and symbolizes human progress, while the lower part of the piece represents volcanic lava, and the unstoppable force of nature, illustrating the fragility of all infrastructure on Earth.
