How do typographic rules differ across European languages, and why do they matter? The conference will mark the launch of Typofix, a new web application that enables automated typographic proofreading in all 24 official languages of the European Union. The programme will also feature talks by international guests and present the results of a three-year international research project led by UMPRUM. The conference will be followed by the launch of the printed publication Typofix Manual and an afterparty celebrating the project’s completion.

Rules governing the use of quotation marks, numbers, punctuation, spacing and symbols are an integral part of every language, reflecting its cultural and historical development. In an era of globalisation and increasingly standardised software tools, these conventions are often overlooked. As part of Typofix, a project initiated by Filip Blažek and Radek Sidun, an international team of experts has therefore created a publicly accessible database of typographic rules and a complementary web application that automatically corrects typographic errors across all EU languages, improves the quality of written texts and significantly reduces the time needed to edit them.

This event will take place within the European Typographic Proofreader project. This project is co-financed with the state support of the Czech Technology Agency within the SIGMA Programme.
