One Hour Apart

In the wake of the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, there are currently around 30 students and interns from that region at UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague). As regards the Ukrainian community at UMPRUM, this constitutes a numerically significant and undeniable ‘diaspora’ whose place within the institution has not been sufficiently documented or acknowledged. Historically, however, one can trace a similar situation that took place in the Czechoslovak cultural milieu between the wars, when, following the Bolshevik Revolution and the establishment of Carpathian Ruthenia, a group of students of Ukrainian origin studied at the UMPRUM in Prague. The book One Hour Apart comprises contextual academic studies focusing on the art of visual artists of Ukrainian origin, as well as interviews with Ukrainian students and recent graduates of UMPRUM. The theme centres on the creative work of members of this diaspora and their political engagement, their struggle with the traumatic circumstances of war, and their reflection on the experience of being uprooted from their original home and integrating into a new one. The aim of the project is to create a memorial archive database of profiles dedicated to the students and their individual experiences; the outcome of the project is to foster an understanding of the situation, empathy and a generally more sensitive approach to individual human stories. The afterword is by Maksym Eristavi. The book is illustrated with a wealth of images and features a special typographic alphabet.

The book was compiled by a team of PhD students from the Centre for Doctoral Studies at UMPRUM (CDS), comprising Ilja Bažanov, Monika Drlíková, Kateřina Klímová, Darja Lukjanenko, Veronika Soukupová and Tereza Štěpánová. Led by Prof. Lada Hubatová-Vacková, a lecturer in the Department of Art Theory and History and Head of the CDS, this team is active in research and teaching in the fields of art history, design and visual culture.
