JAN SMEJKAL - Ballroom

In my work I focus on a global phenomenon called BALLROOM. It is an underground subculture that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s in the USA. This subculture provided the entire Black and Latino LGBTQ+ community with a sanctuary where was no need to hide from the society and a person could become who they wanted or who they felt like for even a short while. My work wants to bring this phenomenon to the public without any embellishment that today ́s social media or television shows present about this topic. Using clothing forms, I created a collec- tion based on the main categories in which one can compete at BALLs.
