Studio of Type Design and Typography: The Masters of Georgian Calligraphy

The Georgian alphabet is one of the unique writing systems in the world. Its origins and influences remain subjects of ongoing debate. Its distinctive shapes and rhythm open space to explore how writing can communicate, not only through meaning, but also through form. Students were invited to explore that connection - to approach writing as both language and visual expression. The works in this selection are their interpretations of Georgian calligraphy, which were created in a series of workshops exploring theory and practice of learning the Georgian language. The tools used in the process are the same ones Georgian first graders use when writing their very first words. The act of learning Georgian calligraphy often takes on an almost ritual quality. The first sentence every child in Georgia learns is “ai ia”  – a phrase made up of only two letters. It translates to “This is a violet.” – Sofiya Meskhi (the lecturer)
