Ars Electronica, POSTCITY, Room 12, Linec
The Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague will be featured at the international festival Ars Electronica, which, under the theme “PANIC – yes/no”, responds to current global crises and radical social changes. Students of the Studio of Architecture III, in their project Terra Syn(es)thetica, explore how new technologies can reconnect architecture with natural ecosystems.
“In a time of environmental collapse, panic seems like a natural reaction. Yet the very technologies that contributed to this crisis — robotics, artificial intelligence, digital fabrication — can also serve as instruments of regeneration,” explain studio leaders Imrich Vaško and Shota Tsikoliya.
For the exhibition in Linz, Austria, four diverse projects were selected. At this stage, they are prototypes that propose a symbiosis of synthetic and organic systems, seeking a balance between control and chance, but above all aiming for sustainable functioning on Earth.
A positive example is the project “Biotopization of Roofscapes”, which offers a way to improve urban climates through greened rooftops. Special ceramic tiles promote water retention and support the growth of local flora with their surface design.
The project “Mossform” (Měchovec) also relies on a symbiosis with plants and is intended for interior humidification. Its shape facilitates evaporation while simultaneously serving as an aesthetic habitat for plants and mosses.
“Urbioms of the Symbio(s)cene” explores urbanism based on the restoration and support of natural habitats. It presents the concept of URBIOMs — bio-inclusive urban units — and analyzes mapping data for the digital processes of their design. Finally, it employs generative AI and other tools to visualize the transformation of a “wild” urban plan.
The project “REMMP – Robotic Engineering of Multimaterial Multiobjective Paraphernalia” operates at the intersection of research and conceptual art. Through robotic printing, it records various data, responding to wind flow and the presence of its creator. When printing with clay and wood, it alters the embedded materials and inserts intricate patterns into reactive panels — half archive, half spatial poetry. REMMP expands large-format 3D printing by adding interactivity and complexity, introducing a paradigm of additive manufacturing that is not only multimaterial but meaningfully multimodal.
All the projects, whether focused on water management or situated at the intersection of science and conceptual art, are united by research — whether through 3D printing, generative AI, or data-driven approaches. The creators offer, if not solutions, then reflections on contemporary issues. The exhibition can be viewed at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz until 7 September 7th.
