Fresh graduates of the UMPRUM Department of Fine Arts were invited to present their diploma projects at the Gallery of the Czech Center New York. The unifying element of the exhibition Station for Paused Forecasting is the need to explore the uncertainty linked to the challenges of both the present and the future.

The desire for deeper insight, perspective, and a recapitulation of the state we find ourselves in resonates throughout all the works. This impulse is embodied in the exhibition title Station for Paused Forecasting. It encompasses both positive and negative visions—ranging from apocalyptic catastrophe to hopeful redemption. The artists articulate these visions through diverse media: video, sculpture, installation, and painting. The works are unified by their exhibition context, which presents them as fragments of research projects conducted at a fictional station for forecasting the future. Rather than proposing definitive visions, the works offer insights into personal reflection and interpretation.

“The exhibition is defined by the active engagement of the participating artists not only with their own perspectives but, above all, with external global uncertainties across an apparently endless spectrum of individual frameworks. The selection of works represents the UMPRUM Department of Fine Arts as a community bound not so much by artistic techniques as by these powerful shared themes. The exhibition is complemented by a site-specific installation that explores the moment of ‘tremors beneath the surface,’ made relative to the provisional truths presented on the surface,” adds Dominik Lang, exhibition curator and Head of the Studio of Fine Arts I.

As part of the collaboration with the Czech Center New York, Savka Marenić, a PhD student at the Studio of Fine Arts I, and Jiří Pitrmuc, a PhD student at the Studio of Fine Arts II, will take part in an artistic residency. Each will spend a month at Flux Factory, engaging in a creative program within a vibrant community of young artists from around the world.

Jiří, whose residency began in August, will present his latest New York–based works as part of Station for Paused Forecasting. Savka, whose residency begins in September, plans to develop a performative, interactive walk during her stay, which will feature in the exhibition’s accompanying program.

“This exhibition is the first in a series that we plan to develop over the next four years in collaboration with Czech art schools. Our goal is to showcase the work of artists at the very beginning of their independent practice. New York is an inspiring and energetic city, one of the world’s major centers for contemporary art. That is why it is important for us that these works appear not only in our gallery but also within the local scene—whether through residencies at Flux Factory or via performances and screenings in independent art spaces,” says Tereza Porybná, one of the exhibition’s curators and Director of the Czech Center New York.

Even after the successful completion of their studies, graduates confront not only new opportunities but also the uncertainties inherent in stepping into the next phase of their artistic practice. The exhibition in New York serves not only as a testament to their academic achievement but also as a unique opportunity to embark on this new stage of their creative journey.
