Superior Objects

Graduates of UMPRUM, Vojtěch Říha from the Studio of Type Design and Typography, and Matěj Polách from the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain will present their collection and exhibition titled Superior Objects in Marseille.

The porcelain collection Superior Objects is based on the Vegan Sans font. Vojtech Říha the creator of this font and typographer, was involved with the creation of porcelain objects during his studies and completed an internship at the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain of Maxim Velčovský. The collection was developed into a series production with classmate Matěj Polách. Each letter of the alphabet was rotated around its left axis, creating a set of symmetrical objects. The inspiration for using a rotational axis came from the pottery wheel, Matěj Polách helped Vojtech Říha produce the forms. The letters were then cast and glazed. The same effect that can be created in 3D software in seconds, took an entire day to make depending on complexity. Extruding the font into space is a response to digitization, during which the tools for creating an original alphabet have been considerably simplified. According to Říha digitization consequentially results in a loss of quality in the profession: “Many fonts are not interesting enough, they lack detail and become undistinguished. We want to show that even after digitization as typographers we need to have a command over the craft of form and have a great sense for the material. I believe that all my typefaces exemplify this."

The collection Superior Objects first attracted attention at Designblok 2016,­ where they were nominated “discovery of the year”. The exhibition was also displayed in the spring of 2017, at DOX Center of Contemporary Art, and in autumn at the GASK Gallery in Kutna Hora.

The exhibition is organized with the support of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague.
