“To See and To Be Seen: Womanhood, Resistance, and the Gaze”
This thesis examines the politics of visibility, repression, and resistance in post-revolutionary Iran through visual art inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s theories of surveillance and punishment, and bell hooks’ intersectional feminism, it explores how the female body becomes a site of both control and revolt. The recurring eye symbol in my paintings represents overlapping gazes—state, patriarchal, personal, and global—and functions as both surveillance and witness. Influenced by Nancy Spero’s feminist visual strategies and the aesthetic language of Persian miniature painting, the work uses watercolor on handmade paper to evoke intimacy and resistance. Framed theatrically, the paintings invite viewers into a participatory space, merging historical imagery with contemporary urgency to position art as a site of mourning and subversive power.
