Archeologists unearth objects, buildings and ruins in digs and then apply scientific methods in trying to decode them. How where were they used? By whom? What techniques were used in producing them? What can they tell us about the civilization that created them? What were its values, social structures and institutions?
As a future archeologist, working to excavate the treasures of the beginning of the 21 st century, or more specifically the year 2014, you will present one finding from your dig - unearthing an image, object or any other remnant of the past and present it in an appropriate manner. You will also write a short 300 word description of the object, giving us your best theory about these object or image: who were its mysterious creators and why did it come into being? In what context was it used?
Try and use a technique of ‘estrangement’ – stepping out of your own time and thinking about what is around us as time travellers from the future who encounter these mysterious things for the first time and without prior knowledge of their use.
The results will be presented in a crit. Be prepared to display your work in an exhibition manner and discuss it in a group.
